Ré is a farmers’ island before being a sailors’ island.
To the east, fields divided into parcels manured with seasweeds can be seen. Grape plants that were not destroyed by phylloxera are cultivated on a sandy soil. The numerous parcels of vineyards alternate with market gardening and particularly with the cultivation of early potatoes which were awarded ‘Appellation d’Origine Controllée’.
In the past, farmers used to work with donkeys and horses as their parcels were too small. On the other hand farmers were working with too much care to use tractors.
